2. SPECIAL POLES & GLACIERS COVERS CANCELLED AT MACQUARIE ISLAND for the 2010-11 Mawson's Huts Foundation Conservation Expedition, Cape Denison, Antarctica
Mawson's Huts Foundation is marketing two different AAT covers from Macquarie Island to raise funds to support the Foundation's 2010-2011 seven person expedition to Cape Denison, which is spending nearly six weeks at the site conserving the huts and artifacts.
Only 100 of each of the numbered First Day of Issue covers with either the Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers mini sheets or pair of sheet stamps will be available. The covers were serviced at Macquarie Island Post Office on 2 April 2010, where two special cachets were also applied. In addition the covers were signed by Marty Passingham (Field assistant with the Pest Eradication Programme, Parks and Wildlife Service, Tasmania) who acted as Courier for the Mawson's Huts Foundation.
On 8 August 2010 the covers were taken by Helicopter (AS350 Squirrel, piloted by Grant Goatley) to the Aurora Australis (Captain Murray Doyle) where, in the captain's cabin, a ship's cachet was applied. The covers were carried on board the Aurora Australis to Hobart, arriving on 11 August 2010. The covers were taken ashore by Marty Passingham and handed over to Rob Easther of the Mawson's Huts Foundation.
